How can Mary be “the Mother of God” if God wasn created?
Many non-Catholics refer to Mary as the “Mother of Christ” but are fearful to refer to her or honor her with the title “Mother of God”. This debate is not new…in fact, it was a bishop in the 4th Century (his name was Nestorius) who first questioned the proper title for Mary, and his question lead to the Church’s clarification. The question basically stemmed from the idea that Mary couldn’t be called Mother of GOD, because that would mean that she had to exist before God. At least, that’s the way that Nestorius saw it.
