How can LEAs set targets on overall absence when national targets are for a reduction in unauthorised absence?
The new overall absence targets allows LEAs to tackle absence in a holistic fashion. However, the Government still wants to maintain pressure on the serious problem of unauthorised absence. Improvements at the LEA level in overall absence are expected to contribute towards reductions in unauthorised absence. We would encourage LEAs to set challenging but realistic targets for reducing absence in the light of their audit of current performance and reference to the National Pupil Absence Tables that include both unauthorised and uathorised absence.
