How can IR help Cancer patients?
Chemoembolization: It delivers a very high concentration of chemotherapy directly into the tumor, without exposing the entire body to the effects of those drugs. Second, the procedure cuts off blood supply to the tumor, depriving it of oxygen and nutrients, and trapping the drugs at the tumor site to enable them to be more effective. Radiofrequency Ablation: A special needle electrode is placed in the tumor. A radiofrequency current then is passed through the electrode to heat the tumor tissue near the needle tip and ablate – or eliminate – it. The heat from radiofrequency energy also closes up small blood vessels, thereby minimizing the risk of bleeding. In general, radiofrequency ablation causes only minimal discomfort and may be done as an outpatient procedure without general anesthesia.
