How can INTERPOL assist in the prevention of currency counterfeiting?
INTERPOL fulfills its role in the prevention of counterfeiting worldwide, by: • receiving, storing and analyzing information on currency counterfeiting and circulating it among the different INTERPOL member countries concerned; • recording, classifying and filing genuine currency specimens; • determining whether suspect specimens are genuine or counterfeit; • recording, classifying and filing counterfeit banknotes; • allocating ‘international indicatives’ (classification numbers) to newly discovered counterfeits; • publishing descriptions of new counterfeit banknotes; • preparing and circulating tables of statistics on worldwide counterfeit currency trends; • organizing periodic international counterfeit currency conferences to share different experiences and to keep up to date with the latest technologies for the production of genuine/counterfeit banknotes.
