How can ignition interlocks help?
Ignition interlocks are devices that are installed in the vehicles of people who have been convicted of driving while impaired. They prevent operation of the vehicle by anyone with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) above a specified safe level (usually 0.02% – 0.04%). Interlocks can be effective in both preventing DWI offenders from driving while intoxicated and for reducing their re-arrest rates for DWI. Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Community Guide Branch conducted a systematic review of 15 scientific studies on ignition interlocks. Researchers found that while these devices were installed, re-arrest rates for DWI decreased by a median of 67 percent relative to comparison groups. Unfortunately, only a small proportion of DWI offenders currently participate in interlock programs. Because of the evidence of their effectiveness, the Task Force on Community Preventive Services recommends more widespread use of interlocks by people convicted of DWI.
