How can i varnish wood professionaly, such as you see in expensive furniture with a smooth finish?
I used to do this… literally, ..thousands of pieces of furniture, billions of dollars worth of inventory. First off.. we don’t use varnish. The finishes you will find on production furniture range from lacquer finishes to acid catalyzed finishes, to urethanes, and in a few occasions, paints, that may or may not be catalyzed finishes. Lacquer is the most common industrial ‘clear coat’ finish, which is often applied over a stain, on wood furniture. Acid catalyzed finishes and Urethanes make up the rest of the commercial finishes. In a few rare occasions, you may see someone use a resin material (most popularly known as a ‘bartable’ look) Almost all of the finishing done commercially is applied with a spray gun. In a few cases, like millwork, they may be run thru a machine, and coated automatically… these machines will use RF (Radio Frequency), or UV (UltraViolet) to cure the finishes (make them harden).
