How can I use milk thistle in a detox treatment?
The herbalist writes… Milk thistle contains acive constituents which improve the functioning of the liver cells (the hepatocytes). This makes it a very useful herb in any condition in which liver function may be compromised, e.g. hepatitis, liver sclerosis etc. The whole notion of ‘detoxification’ is very controversial. The liver is the organ responsible for detoxifying the body in that all substances must pass through the liver to be ‘processed’ and made less harmful to the body, before circulating throughout the rest of the bloodstream. However, if the liver and organs of excretion are working poperly, then the body will constantly detoxify itself. Most so called ‘detox’ remedies either support the liver, such as milk thistle, have a mild laxative effect such as yellow dock and burdock or have a diuretic effect such as burdock and dandelion leaf. Having a healthy diet high in fruit and veg with plenty of water (2 litres per day) is also important. To look at this item click here.
