How can I tell who wrote an article in Grove Music Online?
Author signatures appear at the end of the article, following the bibliography. For longer, multi-part articles, in which different authors contributed to different sections, signatures appear following the respective sections. Grove Music Online observes the following conventions regarding signatures: • John Smith, Mary Brown: John Smith and Mary Brown are coauthors. • John Smith (with Mary Brown): John Smith is the principal author, but Mary Brown contributed material the author or editors felt required specific acknowledgment. • John Smith/Mary Brown: Mary Brown has revised John Smith’s work. • John Smith/R: Used when the revision by another author is slight, and not of a kind to call for attribution. This form is also used for most revisions undertaken by editorial staff.
