Most collectors want their discs to be from original private collections, since the disc may have been played just a few times, rather than potentially 100’s of times for a rental disc. You can’t assume that discs you’re getting from private individuals were always privately owned, since rental stores periodically had sales on rental titles they wanted to dispose of, and they all had one final “everything goes” sale at the end of the CED era. Usually rental discs have (or had) a difficult to remove label identifying the rental store, so look for such a label or signs of its removal. Another technique rental stores used was to write the name of the store in permanent ink directly on the caddy surface to either side of the disc label.
