How can I tell when a naval orange is its sweetest?
February. It used to be January but the rainy season shifted so the best oranges are coming out in February. Sweetness depend on rain and sunshine and picking and if it is too soon then it tastes to watery, if it is too late it tastes to tart. in the middle it is just right. Check for firmness. Too firm and they are watery. Not firm at all and they are bitter. Check for color. Dark orange is better. Green is not rie enoungh. Yellow flecks and it is past due. Brown and you should avoid it. And smelling it does nothing except tell you what type odf orage you are eating. They all smell different based on style. What you are smelling is the zest and not the orange itself. Navel has a rich zest. Clementine has a tangy zest.
