The simplest way for us to determine if a tile is ceramic or porcelain is to check the back of the tile and if it’s color is a dark red/brown, terra cotta or bright white without small specs then you are likely looking at ceramic. If it’s something else, and clearly man made, then you are likely looking at porcelain. Read below for further details. Ceramic Tiles generally have a dark red/brown or terra cotta colored back side with a fine glaze over the front side. They are fired at lower temperatures than porcelain tiles which means they are not as dense as porcelain, but still an excellent and long lasting choice. Porcelain tile is usually beige in color on the back side although it can be other colors. You will also notice small specs on the back side of the tile. Some believe that if a porcelain tile gets chipped on the surface then the area that has been chipped will be the exact same color and texture as the surface. This is not true.
