How can I tell if my Hermit Crab is having babies?

The most common species of crab is the purple pincer crab, so this is probably what you have. (both males and females have purple claws) One way to sex crabs is the femles have a row of feathery appendages along thier abdomins. This is where she will keep her eggs; you cannot see this unless the crab comes out of it’s shell, usually a good time is when they’re changing shells. There is no record of hermit crabs reproducing in captivity, so I doubt your crab is having kidlets. Hermies love to burrow and hide, so that’s probabaly what’s going on. You should have a freshwater and saltwater dish in there already. Make sure the salt is iodine free iodine kills crabs. (natural sea salt is in most grocery stores) my crabs have buried themselves for weeks and been fine, yours might be molting. in this case just let them be until they are through. if you have anymore hermit questions mailthegecko@yahoo.
