How can i tell if my fridge compressor is shot or if I just need freon?

Checking a compressor electrically is not a diy project. It could be overheated because of a lack of refrigerant in the system, or, it could be locked up, or the starting components could be defective. I would guess it is not shorted. If it was, you would likely be popping breakers.
