How can I tell if my cat is sick?
This is one of the difficulties of cats: they don’t like to show when they are sick. If predators can tell that an animal is sick, they are quickly spotted as easy prey. As a result, cats instinctually will not show signs of being ill. There are several symptoms however that can indiciate illness, which is usually based on irregularities in your pet’s behavior. Some examples include:
- Unusual eating or drinking habits (eating/drinking less or more)
- Unusual litterbox habits (wet stools, frequent urinination or urinating outside the litterbox)
- Continuous wheezing and coughing on multiple occasions
- Poorly kempt fur that is matted or dirty (a frequent sign of dental problems)
- Increased irritability and decreased sociability
- Increased chattiness (sometimes cats are complaining they need comfort or relief)
There are many other symptoms that could be a sign your cat is sick. Yearly checkups, a healthy diet, clean litterbox, clean teeth, and plenty of exercise are the main ways to ensure the logevity and happy health of your pet.
