How can I tell if my 1967 Chevelle is a real SS?
• A – The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is the only real way for a U.S.-built Chevelle. The 1967 SS396 was offered in a 2-door sport coupe as well as a 2-door convertible and was a separate series from the 300, 300 Deluxe, and Malibu. The VIN will start with 138177 for the SS396 sport coupe and 138677 for the SS396 convertible. Other 1967 Chevelle model VINs can be found on the Production Numbers page. The Fisher Body Plate located on the firewall will also show the body style for a SS car with 13817 or 13867. However, body plates can be legally changed and even removed in many states so be careful.
