How can I tell if a salle/instructor is Classical?
As mentioned above, Classical Fencing is defined as the study and use of the weapons and techniques as developed in the 19th century. The term itself was clearly defined and used in the 19th century. In 1996/1997 with the emergence of the internet, many traditional fencing masters began to communicate and connect. During this time of initial contact and communication of ideas and similar training a resurgent interest in Classical Fencing was born. At the same time, due to increasing disenchantment with modern sport fencing, many competitive fencers were drawn to this alternative practice. Unfortunately, since there were at that time only a very few Masters and Instructors who had and offered true Classical Fencing instruction, many people drawn to this movement misinterpreted what was meant by ‘Classical’. ‘Classical’ came to be used for everything from Medieval sword fighting to early 20th century sport fencing.
