How can I stop my dog from killing cats?
I had a lab that loved killing cats, kittens especially. He was already neutered and he had been to obediance school. He apparently thought that skunks were cats too. After attacking at least 8 skunks he all at once gave up on killing cats. When a cat would approach him he would get a fearful look on his face and move off in another direction. Once a dog gets a taste of blood they are hard to stop. I had a German Sheppard once that we had gotten as a pup. We had cats also but with him we kept re-enforcing the idea that if he hurt the cats we would be very displeased with him. Eventually he got to where he apparently thought that they were HIS cats and any other dog that tried hurting them was in serious trouble. It was like being chased by a creature from hell. He felt the same way about my pickup truck. I found this site today because early this morning two pit bulls attacked, killed, and tore apart one of my favorite cats. I’m disabled so my wife got stuck with the job of burying the
For all of you who say euthanize the dog. Maybe you need reminding that these cute little kitty cats kill innocent little birds and squirrels. Maybe we should muzzle them or euthanize them the first time they kill something. They are doing the same thing that you are condeming these dogs for, however on a smaller scale. What one needs to do is try and be as responsible a pet owner as possible. I do not believe it’s the taste of blood that keeps these animals killing. It’s the excitement of the hunt (animal instinct). By all means, we as humans exhibt similar behaviors with our enjoyment in fishing and hunting. If you have an animal who has killed a cat, try and place it in a kitty free home or if you decide to keep it make sure the dog remains in a fenced in yard or on a leash at all times when outside. Cage muzzels do not hurt either and allow the dog to breath and eat, unlike the more restrictive cloth muzzels. Could you try pet therapy, I guess if you can think they can breed out of
to all the dog owners that have had problems with their dogs killing cats i surprised that you would even ask what to do you should have the dog put down straight away it starts out with cats then kids and because the dod as already had the taste of blood and killed before and you have done nothing about if the dog kills a child its your fault that dog no matter what breed should be destroyed. any dog that shows aggreswion towards anything shouls be muzzled before it can kill once they kill its to late they need to be destroyed and anyone who says other wise is an idiot a dog is not safe to have around in any community if it portrays aggresion.
