How can I stop my border terrier terrorising my cat?
Border Terriers are hunting dogs and given the chance she probably would injure your cat because that is what they are designed to do. The cat will be under huge amounts of stress in this situation, even though they don’t show signs like a dog would. I have admitted several terrier types into our centre for re-homing because when the owner went out and left the cat and dog together, the dog killed the cat. I would strongly consider re-homing one of the two pets to avoid a horrible situation. Alternatively, only allow the dog and cat together when you have the dog on a lead to prevent chase. Make sure the cat has plenty of places out of the reach of the dog e.g. shelves, tables etc. Please, whatever you decide to do – don’t be tempted to use a shock collar. By doing that you will be punishing your dogs natural instinct which is impossible to change. They will be banned eventually as they are inhumane and cause great distress to your pet.
