If you are generating the MIDI files from Band-in-a-Box, note that Band-in-a-Box 12 and higher have a feature that will do this automatically for you. When you save your MIDI file, simply choose ‘Drums on separate tracks’ from the MIDI File Type combo box. When you open the MIDI file with PowerTracks, all of the different drum sounds will appear on separate tracks. In addition, PowerTracks Pro Audio 12 and higher have a feature that will do this automatically – Edit | Split MIDI Drums, and enter the appropriate data into the dialog box that comes up. If you aren’t using Band-in-a-Box, and/or have an earlier version of PowerTracks, it is still possible to do but it isn’t a single step. We will use the file melanbab.seq, a sample file included with PowerTracks, to demonstrate what you could do.
