How can I send a message via IMAP over a Telnet connection?

I am troubleshooting an IPhone set up as an IMAP client to an Exchange 2003 server. I am able to recieve email but cannot send email. It gives a vague message that the connection failed. I want to connect to IMAP via telnet and issue the commands to send email for troubleshooting purposes, but although I can find all kinds of help on commands to read email, delete folders, etc, I can’t find anything to tell me what the command to send email is.
