You can try everything else first, but I’ve found that washing the wall with tri-sodium phosphate and then repainting is the only thing that really works. To prevent stains from candle soot, you might want to consider switching to candles made from vegetable waxes instead of petroleum-based paraffin wax. A good quality vegetable wax candle will not leave any black soot on your walls or ceilings.
