How can I remove mildew smell from blankets?

The only way I have been able to get rid of mildew smell is by either using bleach or boiling water. Color safe bleach might work but I don’t know what it will do to the colors. I use just white towels in my bathroom because the only way to keep towels fresh is to use bleach when you wash them.
