How can I prepare students to prepare projects and presentations effectively?
• Being clear about your expectations for a project is essential. This Teacher’s Resource contains examples of rubrics that may help you to think about how you will evaluate projects. • It is highly recommended that you spend time up front to design a rubric for the assessment of a project, and then give students a copy of that assessment rubric when the project is assigned. You might develop the rubric with them. • It is reasonable to allow students some in-class time to work on their projects. One suggestion would be for 20 to 30 min shortly after the project is assigned, followed by an additional 20 to 30 min about a week after it is assigned. Depending on your class, you may wish to allow a third 20- to 30-min period of project work. • Provide support for students in planning a timeline for the various components/steps of the projects. The Chapter Projects are set up to encourage this approach. It is recommended that, if a project is assigned to be handed in after four weeks, stude
