This sounds like fun to me! I would create a base from boxes and wads of paper to get the general shape, then would start “sculpting” with paper mache. Use the old fashioned kind initially, with paper and paste, but when you are ready for the final sculpting in detail I would suggest switching to Clay Mache’ or one of the other finer ground products or even an air-dry clay. This way you will be able to really get the detail in the faces and can add more texture to make it look natural. Give yourself lots of time on this as the paper mache needs it to dry! You can paint the dried, finished sculpture in various shades of brown–to look more natural don’t paint it all one solid color. It would look even more natural if you have access to sand, which you can apply to the surface by painting on white glue or Mod Podge and sprinking the sand on.
