If you’re going to have your dad buy a cheap tarp, make certain that it’s made of cotton, not one of those ridiculous plastic tarps. Put one of those on a pole and set a fire under it and you will quickly understand the concept of Darwinism in action… So, have dad get a GOOD 10×10 canvas tarp and paint it with linseed oil. Let it dry for about a week. Find a nice tree and a long piece of rope. Tie the rope to a limb about 7 feet off the ground and stake it to the ground at a 45 degree angle away from the tree. Drape the tarp over the rope with one corner at the bottom and the opposite corner at the top. Tie off the top and stake the other 3 corners to the ground. This is called a “Diamond Fly”, and you can have a small fire at the entrance which will radiate heat off the inside of the shelter.
