Ah the wonderful world of STDs. HIV blood tests check for antibodies (little proteins that help attack the virus in your body) in your blood. It can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months for antibodies to show up in a blood test, with most people showing antibodies by 3 months. So an HIV test wouldn’t show if you’re infected (come out positive) if you got checked today. Although it would show if you were infected more than 3-6 months ago. A normal blood test….hmmm…not sure what you mean by this. If you mean will you get tested for HIV without specifically asking, then the answer is no. You must specifically ask for an HIV test when you go to the doctor. Other sexually transmitted viruses are a bit trickier. If you want to be checked for HPV or HSV (warts and herpes) then generally speaking you will have to ask. Genital Herpes is generally not tested unless you have an outbreak.
