How can I keep my freshwater aquarium plant healthy and alive?
What kind of plant is it? Aquarium plants, just like all others need a source of light and a source of food to thrive. I’m betting that the aquarium lights in your tank are too weak to grow that plant, or they’re not turned on for long enough. The sunlight will do more harm than good to your tank, being that it will cause an algae bloom in your tank. I recommend moving the tank if you can, and researching the type of plant, and its lighting requirements. If you’re not interested in purchasing new bulbs or a new lighting fixture, I recommend plants that thrive in low lighting environments such as java moss, java ferns and amazon swords.
Since you are only using the rooms ambient light, you’ll want to stick with low light plants, it sounds like this one is suffering from a light deficiency. This is one of the most common causes of aquarium plant death. I’d highly recommend low light, hardy and slow growing plants such as java fern, java moss, Anubias, crypts, amazon swords and mariomo moss balls. Java fern is by far the hardiest, and one I highly recommend, as it does well in most aif not nearly all quariums. But mariomo moss balls are often kept in simple jars to bring good luck, so their requirements are pretty low as well. I often tie mine down to a bit of driftwood to give it a carpeted look, and protect the betta’s delicate fins from any rough edges. Plant food tablets are really only efficient with rooted plants and often end up fouling the water, if you choose to go with java fern, either of the above mosses, or the annubias the plant tabs will be obsolete as they will filter mainly through their leaves.
