How Can I Install A Gate Between My House And Fence?
While a 6′ 8″ gate is possible, it will require very solid mounting, and depending on the soil you would put the post in, you might have trouble with even a well-built gate sagging due to the post shifting (unless you want to build a very large concrete footing). A better approach, if you don’t need the full 6′ 8″ width, would be to make part of it a fence, and the rest a gate. Or, build two gates, with one section using a “cane bolt” which mates with a hole in the ground or other method of creating a place for the bolt to sit when that section is not being opened. In one such application, over gravel, I simply drilled a hole in a brick using a concrete bit and set the brick into the ground flush with the gravel surface. The stationary part of a latch (hook, etc) can be installed on the semi-fixed section, with the mating component on the moveable section. With a dog involved, you might also want to use a gate spring to ensure it closes, in case any kids or forgetful adults use the gat
