How Can I Increase Power Output To A USB Device?
I’m not sure where Phil is coming from since all versions of USB are identical from a power standpoint – you get up to 500mA at 5V regardless of which version is in use. The problem is that the keyboard is itself a USB device drawing power from its connection. It will probably need one USB power unit (100mA) to power itself and it needs to guarantee at least one unit for each of the downstream USB sockets it has. Since there are two that means one of them can only provide 3 units (300mA) for a device even if the other socket is not in use. If your device needs more than that it isn’t going to power up. There are two ways around this. One is to hook up a self-powered USB hub to the keyboard and the webcam into that. Make sure that it is a _self_ powered hub with its own power supply. A bus powered hub is another thing taking its power from the bus and actually makes the problem worse. The other and probably simpler option is to use a different USB socket.
