In order to see bacteria, you need at least 600 X magnification just to see the largest of the bacteria. They are really small. Some simple household- type things you can see are yeast, or even the microbes in yogurt. Staining would be helpful in trying to see them. Iodine stains starches and you should be able to get some in a pharmacy. Pond water will definitely yield some cool “critters”. There are many phytoplankton (use sun to make their food) and zooplankton (catch and consume others) to find. Gather your sample from the surface of rocks or edges of ponds. The greener it looks, the better. These do not need any staining and can be seen at lower magnifications. Sometimes if they are swimming too fast, you can slow them down with stuff called “proto-slo”. It is a viscous, clear fluid which slows down the cilia so you can see them. I’m not sure if there is a home-made version of this. Maybe corn syrup would work, but be ready sacrifice a few living organisms. Congrats on working wit
