You have a LEGAL OBLIGATION to pay the agreed rental sum, you do not have to remain in the property however, they cannot force you to stay there, only to pay the rent and make sure the apartment is in good order. DO NOT listen to the advice of the first answer, DO NOT sublet. you will be evicted, (which you may see as a good thing) but you will also have to pay fees for the eviction and you will have a court order against your name. Get your Doctor to send a medical note to your landlord, and look for something else. If they offer you to swap toa ground floor flat, take up the compromise, but say you will not sign another lease, and will continue your current one in the new property. PErhaps speak to your neighbours, see if they’d be willing to do a swap. Get them on your side.
