How can i get my horse to stop wanting to gallop constantly?
ok I ride English style and don’t know much about American horse riding tactics but I have had a lot of experience with crazy horses that just love to go. One of the best methods of regaining control is lots and lots of transitions. Find an enclosed area about 20m by 40m and regularly try to change from walk to trot and back again, trot to walk, walk to trot and trot to canter but make sure you never jump two paces in one go. You’ll need to change pace at least four times every loop around. I also use a technique called the half halt which is when you slow the horse down to the slowest you can get him going without changing pace by squeezing the outside rein slightly backwards and leaning back on your seat a touch then letting him go forward to a more normal speed works great. Doing 20 meter circles and spiraling them in and also changing the direction you are going in by cutting across half the arena, half circles and serpentines might be something you could put more research into.
