First, do you already have a dog you’re trying to register or do you want to buy a dog that’s registered? To buy an AKC-registered dog, ask the breeder if the parents are AKC registered and if the puppies are AKC registrable. Having an AKC registration is good evidence that your dog is purebred (although forged pedigrees aren’t unheard of), you can participate in AKC sports (such as conformation, obedience, agility, herding, etc.), and any puppies your dog has will be AKC registrable (if the other parent is also AKC registered).
