How can I get help with my private student loans?
I’m going to have to respectfully disagree with the other answer you received here – some of it is just not correct. First of all, I’m going to explain that you can not discharge student loan debt in bankruptcy. Section 523(a)(8) of the US Bankruptcy Code explicitly declared educational loans to be non-dischargeable, and the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 extended this non-dischargeability to all forms of “qualified educational loan”, including loans provided by private lenders, like Sallie Mae. There is one exceedingly rare exception, but you would be required to document that you were now suffering from a long-term physical and/or mental disability that would make it highly unlikely that you would ever be able repay these loans. For that reason, a lawyer’s not going to be able to help, because a lawyer can only do exactly what you can do – only he/she will charge you a lot more (and I’m not saying that there’s anything wrong with that).
