You need to send Advance Review Copies (ARCs) of the book to the various magazines (Publisher’s Weekly and Booklist are two of the major ones) and also to online reviewers. Very few newspapers do book reviews any more, except for the major ones like the LA Times, and they only take major literary or best selling authors. Your publisher’s Marketing Department should have handled this particular job for you. Most ARCs go out several months before the book is actually released because reviewers (esp. print magazines) need several weeks of lead time for reviews. Your publisher should also have an in-house publicist who can send out press releases about you and your book.If they don’t, you can do your own press releases for local media. I highly recommend online promotion. There are many blogs and review sites that do book reviews and many will also let authors do ‘guest blogs’ or interviews.
