How can I get a merchant marine document (MMD)?
To get an entry level MMD you’ll have to go to a Coast Guard REC (Regional Exam Center) in person. You’ll need a DOT physical and drug test. This isn’t too hard, but you’ll need normal hearing, vision, blood pressure and not be color blind (even if you have a medical condition such as being color blind you can probably still get a MMD but it could be restricted to certain types of work such as the Steward’s Department). Cost is about $100 depending on where you go. The MMD (also known as a Z-Card) costs $140. It takes about 3 weeks to process. The big thing is your driving and criminal records will be checked. If you have your license suspended you can’t have a MMD. If you have a DUI you have to wait a while (something like 3 years or so) if you have minor criminal infractions you should be OK, just be sure to disclose everything, no matter how old. Drug charges also disqualify. To work on ships that are ocean going you’re need a STCW-95 (Standards of training and Certification for Wat
