How can I get a merchant marine document (MMD)?
To get an entry level MMD you’ll have to go to a Coast Guard REC (Regional Exam Center) in person. You’ll need a DOT physical and drug test. This isn’t too hard, but you’ll need normal hearing, vision, blood pressure and not be color blind (even if you have a medical condition such as being color blind you can probably still get a MMD but it could be restricted to certain types of work such as the Steward’s Department). Cost is about $100 depending on where you go. The MMD (also known as a Z-Card) costs $140. It takes about 3 weeks to process. The big thing is your driving and criminal records will be checked. If you have your license suspended you can’t have a MMD. If you have a DUI you have to wait a while (something like 3 years or so) if you have minor criminal infractions you should be OK, just be sure to disclose everything, no matter how old.
