Call 1-888-PA-PARKS for a list of the types of trials in a state park you’re interested in visiting. What is a rail- trail, and what does the Rails-To-Trails program do? A rail-trail is a former railroad that has been converted to a trail for non-motorized recreational and transportation purposes such as hiking, biking, in-line skating, and cross-country skiing. The rails-to-trails program actively seeks partners in acquiring, constructing and maintaining the trail. The federal government has “banked” these abandoned lines, meaning that, if needed, the trails could be reverted back to active rail-lines.
