Early versions of Q2 always started in 640×480 mode, even when you set it for 512×384. This is a known bug. Here’s a workaround: add +set gl_mode 2 to your Q2 command line: quake2.exe +set gl_mode 2 NOTE: This bug has been fixed as of version 3.
