If you are doing decorative etching, try a kit made for this. Can be found at Hobby stores. Chemicals rather than blasting. If you really want to use sand, get an airbrush with the etching kit. It is very messy though. You need to stencil off the area you want to etch and then devise a way to catch the sand that falls.
