How can I determine what foods are high in saturated fat and which are low?
Some foods are obviously high in fats such as pies, sausages, fatty cuts of meat, cheese, pastries, cream, cheese, cakes, biscuits, chocolate etc. However with some food items such as ready meals it is not so easy, so it is best to read the label and determine how much saturated fat there is per meal. The FSA are encouraging a traffic light system to help determine at a glance how much fat sugar and salt a food product has, red being high amounts, green low. For tips on cutting down on fat go the Food Standard Agencies Website: Saturated Fat. They include advice such as grill food rather than fry, trim the visible fat from meat, remove the skin from chicken, leave out butter or spread when making sandwiches, grate cheese instead of slicing etc.
