Amanda is aware of her difficult situation and she is trying to help her daughter and son. However, she doesn’t cope with the reality very well but rather retreats into the past. For Amanda the past is an illusion, the time when she was a young and attractive girl with a promising future. When Tom invites Jim to dinner Amanda gets caught up in the illusion of receiving a gentleman caller who will solve all their problems. Jim escape from reality is simple: he spends his evenings drinking and watching movies. Jim is particularly impressed by the magician who had espaced after being locked in a coffin.
