How can I connect to the internet while traveling?

They must have internet service in their house! Some cities have tried city-wide wi-fi but most of them have already quit due to the high maintenance costs. If your friend doesn’t have internet service, then you’re not going to have internet service. Wi-Fi means wireless fidelity. It means connecting to the router that is where you are… For Example, it means using your laptop around the house instead of being tied to the desk where the cable comes in. It doesn’t mean that there is a wireless service available to anyone no matter where you are. It’s not the same type of wireless as your (wireless) cell phone. I hope this helps. Many people are, understandably, confused by the wi-fi idea.

You can connect to internet only if you are in hotspot. HotSpot is a venue that offers internet access over a wireless LAN. i.e. Starbucks.
