How can I communicate the message of social care values?
Well there are many strands to this message. A major move was made in the 1980s when social policy lecturers analysed what ‘care’ meant and the way it was being used as a ‘weasel word’ so that ; when the government was saying : -‘caring about ‘ meaning ‘loving’ they conflated this with -‘caring for ‘ ie ..the long term, 24 hour a day, unpaid caring labour of those with children, invalid and aged dependents They then used the emotional blackmail of ‘families care for each other’ to exploit this huge level of unpaid caring work..and emptied and closed down the awful institutions in which governments cared for most of the disabled. However when they did this they used another weasel word conflation: they used the term -”the community will do the caring now’ but by ‘community’ they meant – ‘the family’ and by ‘the family’ they meant the unpaid caring labour of women. So the first job is to choose the most important strand of how you approach this key topic of ‘caring’ are you going to use
