A. One way to do this is to use MS Word’s “cross-reference” function. First, generate a numbered list of reference with the first item of your reference list. The list must be numbered with MS Word’s Numbering function. It is usually generated automatically, but if you are not sure, select the list, and select “Bullets and numbering…” in the “Format” menu, or just click the numbering icon on the toolbar. Then, use cross-reference (“Insert”-“Reference”-“Cross-reference” on the menu) to cite the number (in this case “1”) within the text. Repeat this as you have a new reference item in the paper. When you finish the paper (or at any point of your writing), select the entire text, right click and select “Update Field” or press F9.
