How can I check the version number, and update the internal software?

To check the version number, while holding down the [UTILITY] button, turn on the PM5000. The main version number, and the version numbers of the MAIN CPU, IN CPU, and OUT CPU appear on the display. The internal software can be updated simply by inserting a CompactFlash card containing the new software, and turning on the PM5000. The internal software is updated automatically.
