How can I check if someone installed any type of tracking/ monitoring software on my computer?

I had a boyfriend once do that to my computer. When I turned it on I saw this little icon pop up that kind of looked like Johnny Cash of all things. It was a guy with sunglasses and a black hat. I didn’t know what it was and I couldn’t catch it fast enough to click on it before it disappeared. I described it to my friend who was a computer geek and she told me to just go into the search feature on the start menu and search for “keylogger” “ghost” and/or “keystrokes” and to not only check all files and folders but to redo the search looking in all hidden files and folders. Of course it was in a hidden folder and I was able to bring it up that way and get rid of it. Hope this was some help. I’m sure someone probably has a better way or can explain better than I could. oh and what was on my computer didn’t show up in add or remove programs in the control panel.
