How can I change the display attributes for individual fields at runtime?

By default all field values in the HTML output are displayed using the same attributes (as defined in the screen structure file) but it may be useful in certain circumstances to change the attributes for certain fields at runtime to highlight a particular condition, such as displaying all negative financial value in red for example.
