How can I buy a nice engagement ring as a poor college student with virtually no income?

You know it doesn’t have to be gold, a lovely silver ring will do, I know if the ring was more important than the engagement itself, I would be doing it for all the wrong reasons. How romantic will it be when you do have the money and you present your partner with the ring you wanted to give but couldn’t afford.

You’d probably have to do the payment plan if you want your first choice ring. Or, I think you can just give her a nice cheaper ring and let her know that you will give her a better one later. You could search promise rings. They are generally cheaper, but still nice. Something like this: http://www.helzberg.com/product/jewelry/… Another thought, are there any family rings? Maybe you should ask females in your family if they have any rings to pass down. They don’t even have to be diamonds necessarily. Getting a family ring would be special enough.

How sweet are you, already worried about the simple things. My husband and I got our rings at Wal-mart, mine was $100.00 and his was $50.00 and we LOVE the, , they are so pretty, and I have seen great looking ones at other multi-purpose shopping that are just as nice. It is the design of the ring and how well it fits her style that matters. We did not have a big wedding either, we actually went to the court house and then had a bbq at my moms house for the reception. and it was great. We have also discussed re-newing our vows in 5-10 years and having the BIG wedding then. Not that we have any doubt this will work, but because that is when we will have the money to do so. Weddings are supposed to be a once in a life time thing, but that does not mean that you cannot have a do-over to make up for what was lacking the first time. We are.

A promise ring right now sounds more appropriate if you are worried about getting married on a shoestring budget. Talk to your lady about it. Does she want a big, dreamy wedding or is she perfectly happy with a small, intimate ceremony? Once you get her ideas, then you can decide what kinds of rings to buy, etc. My personal suggestion is very much the same as the other answers here: an engraved gold ring or a beautiful sterling silver ring with crystals. There are many other beautiful gemstones than diamonds, such as tanzanite, topaz, garnet, amethyst, and sapphire (lab-created, natural, many different colors). You just have to look really hard to find it, that’s all. My finance bought a discounted lab-created sapphire ring for me at Kohls.com and I wear it proudly and happily every day. It’s really the love and effort that counts.
