You need to understand what kind fo manager you have and what he/she looks for. You then act accordingly. There are many different types of managers. Some are draconian, don’t want any chit-chat, just head down and working. Others want to be adored by their underlings. Some just want results, don’t bother them unless you have your work done and need more. Some are aloof and don’t care about the work or you or anything. And there are many others. Think of it like Baskins & Robbins ice cream, manager come in 31 different flavours! From what you describe, it sounds like your manager is the stuffy type. Work is work and that’s it. You arrive, do your work until its time to leave, then you go home. They don’t believe it’s a social place so save it for outside.
