How can I be certain that all of the test laboratories are completely familiar with the TB603 test method?
The CPSC (with assistance from the SPSC) is at present conducting an inter-laboratory study of the NIST test protocol to determine whether the test method is reliable. The six volunteer laboratories that are participating in this effort will identify, among other things, any problems a particular lab has when conducting the test. A sensitivity test was done beforehand to determine the extent to which test results if the test procedure are affected by reacts to varying laboratory conditions and the level of precision in conducting the test that is required. That exercise was meant to determine how much “operator error” will affect test results. While it is important that all test labs be as careful as possible in following all details of the NIST test protocol, we are encouraged by the results of the sensitivity analysis, which show that the procedure will tolerate a fair amount of such operator error. Second, California does not require mattress producers to maintain its test records.
